Dr. Mary Case is Professor Emerita at St. Louis University School of Medicine and the Chief Medical Examiner for St. Charles, Jefferson and Franklin Counties in Missouri. Her 50-year career has resulted in her becoming a globally recognized forensic pathologist and neuropathologist. Dr. Case has an extensive career in child abuse investigations and is a leading expert in abusive head trauma cases.
Dr. Case’s interview is the fourth of our 5-episode series celebrating the NCSBS’ 25 years of working to keep babies safe through shaken baby syndrome/abusive head trauma (SBS/AHT) prevention education. This series brings in a parent of a victim of SBS/AHT, a doctor, medical examiner, attorney and long-time donor to discuss how the NCSBS has impacted SBS/AHT prevention in their respective arenas.
In this episode, Dr. Case discusses how she became one of the few doctors who practiced neuropathology and forensic pathology in her early career. Dr. Case shares how her extensive work in child abuse cases led to the early formation of child death review teams where multi-disciplinary teams worked together on solving cases involving child deaths. Dr. Case talks about her pride in mentoring the new generation of pathologists, particularly the many young women who entered the field to follow in her footsteps.
